Day 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 :D

Guten Abend!

So I ran into some issues the last few days and didn't have enough time to actually try to solve them. Following are the entries that I've missed to upload here:

Day 3:

So here is my third day entry. Something smaller today because I don’t have a lot time today. Sooo…an explosion, a cloud and a smoke pile :)
And don’t forget to check out the tumblr of @aletalis her recent animation of Yuro is just adorable :3

Day 4:

Day 4 of our art challenge! I started with something completely different. I actually wanted to merge 2D and 3D FX animation. The plan was to draw an FX and use it as spritesheets, then put in UE and make a fancy shader for it. But it didn’t work out as intended and I got frustrated. So…I started something simpler…flamey flame flame.
Check out what @aletalis did today as challenge…is super pretty and I love the dynamics!

Day 5:

Day 5! Doodles of different kind of FX. I hope I will find some time to get more engine hands-on soon. Game of thrones kinda got in the way today. Crazy last episode.
Anyways…as always check out @aletalis tumblr. Actually I haven’t seen here entry of today but I bet it is awesome. Sorry for the crappy picture but it is late and I will post a Scan of it tomorrow.

Day 6:

Day number 6 :) a drawing again. Drawing really feels good currently and was pretty necessary after a long dreadlocks care session. So I started to read Joseph gillands “elemental magic” again. God I love this guy. If you really want to learn something about VFX pic up this book and strap it to your face. So today’s post is dedicated to elemental magic :)
Check out @aletalis@aletalis tumblr as well :)

Day 7:

So as promised a scan. A really crappy one, dunno what is wrong with my scanner. Anyways…I did small PS adjustments to make it barely visible.
Today I started to pick up Doom 4 again and thought it might be cool to do some research here. This ended in me being out of ammo a lot of times because I tried to observe the muzzles :P
Since the game crashed I was not able to do more sketches because it is late and I will go to bed now.
Stay curious guys…and look what @aletalis did today :) By the way, we extended the art challenge to 30 days. Means a lot more to come of this stuff :)

Second day - Art challenge!

So this is the second day of the art challenge with @aletalis :) Check her blog out, she did an awesome 2d animation of her pen n paper char today.
So this is my entry. I really wanted to try out GPU particles because at work we  barely use them.
So there you go, a glowy spiral thingy :)

Still alive!

Hey there!

It's been a while since my last post. So I am doing an art challenge with a friend. We are doing something artsy everyday and post it. My focus is on visual FX, mostly 3D but 2D animation helps a lot with understanding the dynamics of FX so I’ve tried something small first. A black pixel fire..yay!

It is far from perfect but I just started with pixel art recently and I didn't do a lot of animations so far...so...it is something I can use as solid base :D

Stay curious!

Bouncy Bouncy!

Good evening beautiful creatures of the night!

Here we go, the second bouncy ball animation!

On friday my vacation will start. I really hope that I can pull out one or two animations, but we'll see.

Have a nice day/evening/afternoon/whatever!

Stay curious!

I am back!

Hey there lovely individuals out there in the realm of the internet!

I come in peace and shall tell you about my artsy adventures, of happiness and frustration, of success and failure, of learning by doing and try and error.

Finally it has happened. I've found the way back to my blog. Since my last post a lot of stuff changed. I got a good internship in Berlin which finally transformed into a Junior VFX Artist position. So I work, be creative and help to form a game to its final form.

Besides being a magician of explosions, glitter and unicorns I did some private projects too. Mostly 2D Art and some VFX. In the last few weeks I decided to finally start to learn 2D animation. Something that fascinates my since my early childhood and created the basement to the person I am now.

There you go. My first 2D animation of the classical bouncy ball:

To gain experience and basics as soon as possible I decided to make a list. Of  30 bouncy ball animations. The original plan was to make kind of a "30 days of animation" challenge but there is a lot of stuff going on in my life and I know that I won't make it so it's more of a "30 animations I do as fast as my time permits" challenge.

The list.

After the 30th animation I would like to animate one of my OCs. We'll see. I am super excited and eager :)

I was thinking about a good ending quote. But there is no good idea floating in my mind so I will go with

"Stay curious!"

Finished it!

Hi there!

I know it has been a long loooong time since my last post. My project in school and some other things like looking for a job and my final exams etc ate a lot of my sparetime. But I finally did it! Here you go!

And I can tell you this: It was a real pain to capture this video. Unfortunately my RAMs broke a few weeks ago and now I have to work with 4 GB. What a drag!

However. I pushed a bit the colors and worked with different masks for the stripes. The particle itself barely changed.

Now I am so glad that it is done. New projects are waiting.

Have a nice day and see you next time!

Time to start a new project!

Hi there!

I am a last semester - Game Art & Animation student in Berlin and specialized in Visual Effects! Besides working on a studentproject and polishing my portfolio I try to do some fun stuff  in my freetime :)

So I played Mass Effect 3 and saw a really beautiful particle effect. You can find it in the Geth Entity and it's used as kind of portal.

This is just a shot I took from a youtube video. It would take days until I reached this part by myself

I would like to build it too. And this was the time when my "Mass Effect Portal Project" was born.

My first action was a particle breakdown. I wanted to know how it works and what it would take to build it. This is my result:

I like being prepared!

This kind of approach is really worth it. I started to work it out for me while working on my current project and it feels better and more efficiend. A quick visualization, asking for feedback, build it! It's good for getting ideas.

So after the sketch I built some meshes for the outter ring, the inner ring and the floating cubes in 3DS Max.

The next step was to create it in UDK. Below is the current status.
Still a lot to do ;)

WIP-shot

The most materials are just basic colors at the moment. For the blue cylinder I used a depthbiasedalpha-node to prevent clipping-edges. Unfortunately it raises the costs of the material but that's the price I pay for a good appearence ;)

Cascade-shot

I encountered some problems with the floating cubes. At first I used just one emitter and gave it the size-range from x: 0.1 y: 0.1 z: 0.1 to x: 0.4 y: 0.4 z: 0.4 but it refused to stay to the origin relations and spawned a lot of  rectangular shaped cubes. I am pretty sure it works with just one and I just forgot something but my quick solution were three emitters with fixed sizes. (But I will work out how to do it with one emitter!)

My next step will be to add the glowing stripes, tweak a bit and create proper textures/materials.

Thanks for reading until this point!
See you next time!
